Groundhog Day is one of my absolute favorite holidays and it is just around the corner, February 2nd. If you are thinking Groundhog Day is a really lame movie with Bill Murray, you would be right, but it’s so much more.
Groundhog Day is where Punxsutawney Phil, the “official” groundhog of Groundhog Day, emerges from his burrow on Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania and predicts the rest of the weather for winter. According to legend if he sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather ahead, however if his shadow is nowhere to be seen then spring will be early. The “Official Site of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club” is a wonderful resource for all things groundhog. It contains a Teacher’s Corner for classroom ideas and lesson plans, the history of Groundhog Day and Phil, items to buy, and even a recipe for Groundhog Cookies.

For a craft idea I found a Peek-A-Boo Groundhog puppet that is relatively easy to make. If you are lacking time and supplies, discuss shadows and how they occur. Silhouette pictures are another fun idea and don’t require many resources. All you need is a light source (lamp), paper, and a marker. Tape the paper to the wall and place your child between the paper and the lamp. Trace your child’s shadow.
My children’s favorite way to celebrate the day? To eat ground hog of course! My grandmother always fixed ground hog on February 2nd, and it’s a tradition I have carried on with my own children. This year I am planning Groundhog and Egg Sandwiches, which I’m sure you’ve had before just with a different name, like Egg McMuffin.
Groundhog and Egg Sandwiches
English Muffins
Eggs fixed your favorite way
Cheese
Sausage (or rather ground hog)
Toast your muffins, fry your sausage and fix your eggs in your favorite way. Top it with cheese and eat!
Super easy and your kids will love the bragging rights for the next day!
